Steve Young heads up the Information Engineering Division, Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. His major contributions to speech research and technology concern spoken language systems, including speech recognition, speech synthesis and dialogue management. He served as Vice President of Engineering and Chief Scientist of Entropic, Ltd., prior to its acquisition by Microsoft in October, 1999. He was Chair of the School of Technology and a member of the General Board of Cambridge University from 2001 through 2004. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA). In 2004, he received a Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
